Language Practice: Sentence Model
"What results from these educational methods is a mode of thinking (or, more accurately, of not thinking) that equips our kids for the future: Future McDonald's employees. Future corporate board members. Future special prosecutors. Future makers of the 100-best-books lists who fondly recall what they first read in high school - and who may not have read anything since."
The above sentence demonstrates the use of anaphora, along with parallel fragments. Click the link to study this rhetorical device.
Now practice with some anaphora of your own! Use the above quote as a model and write one about anything you wish. Make sure to use anaphora in a series of fragments, just like Francine Prose did! Can you use some vocabulary words too?
Today, we are going to try a reading strategy called 'jigsawing.' You are now in your 'home' groups. Each of you will be assigned to an 'expert' group.
Read, annotate, and discuss your assigned paragraph(s) with your 'expert' group. (BTW, I uploaded a handy PowerPoint on how to read actively and annotate for my Pre-AP. You might find it helpful too!)
Group 1: Paragraphs 1 and 2
Group 2: Paragraph 3
Group 3: Paragraph 4
Group 4: Paragraphs 5-7
Group 5: Paragraphs 8-9
(1A- Forget the jigsaw thing! Work as a class on paragraphs 1-4.)
Return to your 'home' group and share your knowledge! Discuss the beginning of the passage.
As a group, discuss and answer questions 1, 2, 3, and 5 from "Questions on Rhetoric and Style" on pg.108-109 in your LOC book. (1A- Just do questions 1, 2, and 3.)
Homework
Read Sherman Alexie's essay, "Superman and Me" pg.110-112
